Our tour of the Regional Broadband Consortia websites continues this week with a visit to the North West Learning Grid (NWLG) site.

I’ve mentioned the NWLG Primary Music resources and the World War II material in past blog entries.

Other resources on the site include Key Stage 1 interactive geography games, KS2 map games, a simple ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ animation, ‘Life Processes and Living Things’ activities and some Year 2 and Year 5 maths games.

Finding material on the London Grid for Learning (LGfL) site is quite difficult. A lot of the resources are tagged as premium and can only be accessed by London based teachers. There are some useful links to material on the LGfL and associated LEA sites, though. ‘Holnet - The History of London’ has WWII and Victorian resources. The DACTA NXT project details the use of Lego Mindstorms kits with KS2 students. The Tower Hamlets ICT Team have produced an excellent new primary ICT scheme of work.

The East of England Broadband Network has a huge selection of resources that can be accessed freely by educators.

I’ve mentioned the British Myths & Legends resource in an earlier blog entry. The E2BN site also features a great multimedia gallery packed full of useful photographs, sound files and video clips. Their Celebrating Language resource showcases diversity of languages and cultures in the region through presentations featuring local children.

Other useful resources: E2BN Flash Meeting, Essex Life in Archive Film, ICT in the Early YearsLocal Heroes, The Day After,  Cook it! and Digital Story Telling Education.

I’m going to be taking a look at some of the resources available through each of the English Regional Broadband Consortia websites this week. I don’t know how many people have the chance to look at the material other areas are putting online. It’s well worth doing as there are a lot of resources that are freely available for use by teachers, no matter their location.

First up is the CLEO (Cumbria and Lancashie Education Online) website. Some of the resources that caught my eye were the very interesting Chinese paintbox package, several useful RE videoclips and the excellent Literacy material based around William Wordworth’s poem ‘Lucy Gray’. There’s also a great section on creating stop motion animations with plenty of examples of work by students.

I’ve mentioned the excellent Visual Thesaurus in the past and the Visuwords site is similar in some ways. It’s billed as an “online graphical dictionary”. Simply type in a word and possible definitions spring out around it as well as related words and some synonyms. Remember, though, that the dictionary of words is not censored or targeted at primary school pupils.

Tux Paint is a free open source drawing program designed for primary students. Versions of the software are available for a wide variety of operating systems including Windows, MacOS and Linux. Tux Paint is fully configurable, so you can do things like turn off the sound, disable the print function, remove the rubber stamps feature or add your own colour palettes.

I don’t think you’ll find a bigger (or even better) collection anywhere else on the Internet. This great site has been online for ten years and contains over 650 fables as well as 127 fairy tales.

This page brings together feeds from a wide variety of different blogs produced by students and teachers in Scotland. I’ve just been looking at some of the great work at Pencaitland Primary School,  Law Primary School and Sandaig Primary School. Good examples of how you can use blogs with students. If you’re interested in producing your own blog then take a look at the Wordpress tutorials on Andrew Brown’s blog. Or how about listening to the Connected Live Podcast? This is definitely an aggregator that is worth bookmarking.

I know that a lot of Primary Resources users also visit this great assemblies site from the Christian group SPCK. The site has been online since 1999 and contains a huge archive of assembly scripts, including a selection of material based around other religions. Particularly popular with our readers, and very useful at this time of year, is the Flying Pizza Harvest Assembly.

This month’s BBC Schools Newsletter includes details of this interesting site which includes some really useful practical advice for teachers who are organising a school production. It’s based around a sample musical, Sleepover Planet, but all the tips can equally be applied to just about any performance.

The Sleepover Planet website is a complete toolkit which takes teachers and pupils step by step through the process of staging a school musical. With lyrics, interactive musical notation and a practical guide to stagecraft, putting on a school musical has never been easier.
