Oxfam has sent me details about this site…

“Get beneath the glitz of the World Cup… Oxfam has launched a series of free online activities for 9-11 year olds. Bring on the World uses football as a springboard to explore global issues including the sportswear industry, whether competition is ‘a good thing’, and the inequalities between participating countries. It helps pupils learn about the countries involved in the World Cup, and includes a ‘country trumps’ card game, mapwork, debate, and photo activities.

Bring on the World offers teachers the choice of either five mornings (2.5 hours x 5) or five whole days of activities (2.5 + 2 hours x 5) - ideal for an Activity Week in the Summer Term. The resource uses different teaching and learning methodologies which engage all pupils, and emphasises foundation subjects, literacy and English. It develops thinking and debating skills, research abilities, and teamwork. There is comprehensive background information for teachers, and a scheme of work.”

School Link is a new project from the Save the Children charity for Key Stage 2 students. It has been developed to give teachers and pupils a better understanding of the lives of children in other countries. Through the activities and materials on the site, pupils will be able to learn about the children in countries where Save the Children works. The first schools to be profiled are in rural farming communities in the Punjab province of Pakistan or Yunnan Province in Southern China. Children can learn about these schools, the communities, the children who live there and the country they live in.

An important part of the project is Friendship Friday, a fundraising day for schools in Pakistand and China that will be held this year on Friday 19th May.

http://www.oxfam.org.uk/education/resources/mapping_our_world/

Oxfam launched a brand new free website last week… Mapping our World helps pupils explore the difference between a map and a globe, and how different map projections affect our perceptions of the world.

Oxfam says: “Designed for whole class learning on an interactive whiteboard, this resource will transform pupils’ understanding of their place in the world and develop skills of enquiry and critical thinking. A host of colourful characters guide pupils through the activities, including Holey Moley, Bob the Pirate, and aliens from the Planet Famox making learning fun and teachers’ lives easier!

Mapping our World is supports the Geography curriculum (KS2/P3
upwards) and is also ideal for bringing a global approach to Citizenship, PSE and ICT studies. The resource suits all abilities and learning styles, and features nine structured activities and full teachers’ notes.”

I’ve just found an even better recycling website than the one I mentioned yesterday. Recyclezone features tons of interactive online games and clear information pages.

There’s also instructions for making your own recycled paper, how to make a worm composter and compost waste as well as lots of other seasonal recycling ideas (although they’re currently still showing the Summer ones!)

The teacher’s section includes a collection of teacher’s pages from the ‘Waste’ newsletter, details of how recycling fits in to the curriculum, recommended websites and publications and practical steps for cutting down waste and introducing recycling at school.

This site will help your students learn how our glass, plastic, metal and paper is recycled. There’s also a simple sorting game where pupils get to sort the household waste into the correct containers. Teachers can also send off for an education pack and download activity sheets.

HMS Endurance Tracking Project September 7, 2007

One of our contributors has been in touch to recommend a web site that she’s found useful:

“My class love the HMS Endurance tracking project. We have been tracking Endurance’s deployment as she sails to Antarctica and learning about her work with BAS (British Antarctic Survey). The online information is readable, very visual and there is even an email facility to contact the ship and ask a geography related question.”

It looks like the ship is on its long journey back to Portsmouth at the moment. There’s still plenty of interest on the site with some useful location factfiles and plenty of great pictures and other resources.
