Cleave Teacher Resources October 1, 2007

This is a group of resources that I’ve linked to on Primary Resources for a long time. I thought I’d flag up the site here in case people haven’t fully explored all the super material that’s available. The site includes a large collection of really useful grid sheets, number searches, maths games and a lot of great shape and space resources. Some of the sheets are designed for secondary level work but a large proportion of the files can be adapted for use with primary students.

I was delighted to read, on Merlin John’s news blog, that the excellent Footee website is making a return. Saved from oblivion, thanks to site creator Phil Clegg, it’s now found a home as part of the Football Association’s website. In Footee, students complete educational games in order to earn the “currency” needed to fund their own fantasy football team. I used the site a lot with students back when it was first online. It’s a great method of reinforcing a wide variety of topics in a very fun way.

If you’re looking to link your maths lessons to the current Rugby World Cup (or later in the year to the Six Nations etc.) then check out the ‘Rugby Scoring’ activity on the excellent EdRugby site from the Australian Rugby Union. There are also activities for other subject areas including a great one on rugby writing and also lessons based around rugby kits.

I thought I’d give Adrian Bruce’s excellent website another mention here as he’s just put up a nice little collection of prime number posters. They’ve been designed to go on his class ‘mathematics wall’ to help his students remember some of the important information about primes. Adrian is planning to produce more posters as the year progresses so it’s worth keeping an eye on his blog.
Gordon’s Flash Modules (Numeracy) September 7, 2007

Gordon’s Flash Modules are a collection of over 80 mathematics teaching tools from the Coventry Primary Numeracy Team. Many of the online resources would probably work best as teacher led activities on an interactive whiteboard but there’s also quite a few that would be suitable for independent work. I particularly like the dartboard modules as they would be perfect for mental and oral starters.

This US website includes some good maths and English online games as well as several storybooks and comics. Advertising is minimal and all the games in the Flash-driven ‘Math Arcade’ can be adjusted for difficulty depending on the age of the student.

Chris Smith has put together a huge selection of Flash powered clocks and timepieces from all over the Internet. It’s a great site for brightening up those numeracy lessons. Your students will love some of the more unusual ways of telling the time! The pages also contain a good selection of countdown timers and stop watches.
Maths at Subtangent September 7, 2007

This site, by mathematics teacher Duncan Keith, contains a large selection of investigations, games and other resources. Although much of the material is probably best suited for older students there’s plenty on the site that’s useful for Key Stage 2 as well. Games include ‘Who Wants to be a Mathionaire?’, ‘Higher or Lower’, ‘Countdown’ as well as the super ‘Broken Calculators’ game.
Maths Anarchy September 7, 2007

Teacher Shirley Sides has contributed a lot of material to the Primary Resources site. Maths Anarchy is her own website and it contains a good selection of mathematical investigations, reasoning problems and puzzles. There’s also an interesting article about the place of investigations in the primary curriculum.

There’s a great set of Literacy and Numeracy powerpoints on this school’s site. They’re mostly for the foundation stage and KS1 but there are some for KS2 as well.
