PETA have produced this “Animals and Us” pack, which contains eight lesson plans for key stages 1 and 2. It looks at issues including the role of zoos, companion animal care and elephants in captivity. According to the PETA website, the lessons are designed to help students learn how to evaluate information and opposing views, treat animals with care and respect, make choices within a moral framework and examine how animal issues are portrayed in the media Follow the link at the top to view the pack online and order a free copy for your school.

It’s worth checking out the main PETA education site, http://www.petaref.org.uk/ for more resources. There’s also a standalone website, Share the World, which was produced to help pupils better appreciate the animal kingdom.

This absolutely superb website has been produced by Newbury Park Primary School in Redbridge. It showcases the huge number of languages spoken in the school and provides a wonderful resource to promote language awareness.

Each language is demonstrated by one of the bilingual children at the school. You can listen to some simple everyday words, basic questions & answers and learn how to count from 1 to 12. There’s also a section which gives a little information about where the language is spoken.

You can download each of the presentations or the associated audio files to use offline. There’s also a resource pack for each language (which gives you everything you need to make a suitable wall display) as well as a great activity booklet with over a hundred ideas for promoting language awareness.

The new site from BBC Scotland has been designed to cover areas of PSHE for primary students. It’s a very attractively put together site using cartoons and real photos together with lively audio. Students are invited to take a trip down to the virtual park and meet some of the characters wandering around. Each person is displaying a different emotion and by talking to them you learn why they’re feeling that why. It’s a great site and although it seemed a little buggy when I tried it no doubt they’ll iron out the kinks as time goes on.

Welltown is a lovely little site aimed at KS1 students. It explores all aspects of health; physical, mental and emotional. The site covers a lot of Science and PSHE material including healthy eating, physical activity, accidents, bullying, smoking and safety in the sun. As you’d expect there’s also a full guide for teachers and parents to get the most out of the online material.

The Britkid website is about race, racism and life as seen through the eyes of nine fictional children. Students can either choose to explore the site by following one of the children or by exploring the town of Britchester. The site covers PSHE, citizenship and religious education objectives. Some of the issues explored include understanding of different religions, racism in sport, prejudice, immigration and harassment. It’s an interesting site that may work best as a whole class focus where you can pick and choose the material on the site and carefully discuss some of the issues involved.
