These resources, from Cancer Research UK, are designed to help promote sun safety in schools. Lesson activities include creating a product to provide shade from the sun, measuring the length of shadows and creating pop-up education books. There is a sample sun protection policy to download, a collection of informative cartoon animations, tips for running a school sports day and a selection of useful links. There are also lots of resources connected to the annual SunSmart competition which this year (2010) gives schools a chance to win a shade canopy worth over £3000.

This page on the Healthy Planet website has a collection of lesson plans, for years 1 to 6, designed to promote awareness of environmental issues. Although they’ve been specifically produced for use around Earth Day (April 21st) the ideas could easily be used at any time of the year.

There are a couple of resources on the Go Fruit! website that primary teachers might find useful. You can download an interesting powerpoint explaining how apples are grown and there’s also a useful worksheet showing a range of different fruit. Teachers are also able to send off for a free book, The Great Greedy Gogmagog.

The high quality teaching material includes interactive story books, experiment and activity ideas, presentations featuring great images, a very useful printable word bank and lots of curriculum links.

Classes studying the Earth & Beyond in science lessons may wish to take a look at the BBC’s Solar System site. Drawing material from past BBC programmes such as The Planets, The Sky at Night and Horizon (as well as new Wonders of the Solar System show) the site  includes images, facts, clips, videos and animations.

What on Earth
is a nationwide project,by the British Science Association and iSpot, to celebrate National Science and Engineering Week 2010. The aim is to get people  to go outside into their parks and gardens and to take photos of the plants and creatures they don’t recognise. In exchange, What on Earth sends each person a packet of seeds specially designed to grow a range of plants that will encourage a greater level of biodiversity (subject to availability), and an information and education pack.

Soap manufacturer Carex have produced Hands Up for Hygiene, a programme to help teachers, education and
health practitioners teach children to understand the link between good hand hygiene and the prevention of the spread of germs. There are resources for pre-school and primary level students as well as a collection of hygiene related songs to download.

Young Science Investigators, from the BP Educational Service helps pupils aged 7 – 11 learn about electricity, energy and life processes, protecting the environment, living things in their environment, micro-organisms, rocks, materials, forces and friction, and energy through ‘online experiments’. The resource includes audio hints and tips for differentiation, photos showing real-world usage of the science covered, and video clips to demonstrate principles. Free registration is required to use the material.
