Making a Mint is a botany and enterprise project for 7-14 year olds from NESTA’s Future Innovators Team and Planet Science. The competition will see entrants given a free pack of mint seeds and set the challenge of adding as much value to the grown plants as possible. Teams will then sell their minty products whilst recording its activity, including profit and loss, on specially designed balance sheets before the closing date of 6th July. Ideas could range from making and selling mint tea to producing a booklet about 101 uses of mint. With few guidelines, children are being encouraged to be as creative as possible.

At the end of the competition, NESTA will look at the top 50 entries which have made the most money and award a prize to the most creative money-making scheme. Participants will also have the chance to win £1000 for their school in either Amazon or Garden Vouchers.

With the competition designed to educate kids on the science behind growing a plant from seed, as well as teaching them valuable entrepreneurial skills. Packs can be secured by visiting the web address at the top of this post. Youth groups and individual teams can enter.

The Potato Story from McCain Foods looks at how potatos are grown, harvested and how they can form part of a balanced diet. It covers a lot of KS2 science (Life Processes and Living Things) objectives through four fun, interactive activity sections. It’s very well put together with lots of nice touches (such as having the sound turned off by default and having no mention of McCains on the pupil pages). There are a collection of useful teaching aids, information sheets and lesson plans on the site as well.

This great site, from Washington State University in the US, features clever cat Dr. Universe answering science questions posed by students. What makes your hands prune up when soaked in water? How do harmful bacteria make you ill? Do frogs sleep? How do our bodies make blood? They’re just some of the questions answered.

I’ve mentioned some of the sites that make up Canterbury Envionmental Education Centre’s wondeful NatureGrid resource in the blog before.

The most famous of these sites is Sebastian Swan’s Infant Explorer which was created by Kent teachers and includes wonderful KS1-targetted big books, teachers’ & parents’ pages, science links and lots of Literacy lesson plans and resources. Sebastian even has his own weblog!

The NatureGrid site has absolutely loads of other nature and habit themed pages. There’s material on ponds, woodlands, grasslands, plants and rivers. There’s a section on art, the Eco-Explorer sustainability website and also web quests that involve locating answers to questions using NatureGrid.

NatureGrid includes annotated QCA units of work that demonstrate where and when the websites can support learning. This site shows how well environmental centres, local teachers and council advisors can work together to produce material that can help educate students across the country.
