This great download was mentioned by one of the posters in our forum recently. It’s an absolutely brilliant little program that gives you a simulation of the solar system to play with.

It shows you how the planets are currently aligned and you can watch as they slowly orbit (or very quickly orbit as you can adjust the speed!) the sun. You can fly all around the solar system , centre and even land on each of the planets.

You can turn on and off lots of different graphical settings to show the planet orbits, comets, star names and lots more. There’s even a feature to show all the constellations both as dots and lines and also as pictures…. you get to see Ursa Major as the Great Bear etc.

Grow Your Own Grub is a website from Portsmouth City Council that’s designed for any school that wants to run an outdoor food growing project. This comprehensive website gives you all the information you need to make your project successful. It covers growing vegetables in the ground as well as growing them in containers (for those schools who are short of space). It’s a great way to encourage an interest in growing (and eating!) vegetables.

Welltown is a lovely little site aimed at KS1 students. It explores all aspects of health; physical, mental and emotional. The site covers a lot of Science and PSHE material including healthy eating, physical activity, accidents, bullying, smoking and safety in the sun. As you’d expect there’s also a full guide for teachers and parents to get the most out of the online material.

Engineering Interact is a science and engineering website aimed at 9-11 year olds. It covers the topics of light, sound, forces & motion, the earth & beyond and electricity. Each section has a story, science facts and a quiz. There’s also examples of real-life applications of the science. The teacher’s section shows how the site links to the National Curriculum. The resource bank is also useful as it allows you to view the facts, quiz and applications slides without going through the main story. The graphics aren’t of the highest quality but it’s still a great site.

Some of the best sites I’ve come across recently have been produced by final year multimedia degree students. Pollen Park is an excellent site by Christina Handford. It’s designed to cover the material in QCA Unit 5b Lifecycles. You take on the role of a bee collecting pollen and as you travel around Pollen Park you learn all about flowering plants. The more activities you do, the more pollen you collect. It’s a lot of fun and very well animated.

I particularly like the safety section on this electricity themed site. There’s also projects to carry out, printable worksheets (including the history of electriciy and details of how electricity gets from power stations to the home), quizzes and games.

You can also download seven different computer programs that look at different aspects of teeth including the structure and type of teeth, tooth decay and all about animal teeth. A card pack, video, big book and CD-ROM are available for purchase from the BCCCA (the Biscuit, Cake, Chocolate and Confectionery Association!)

This great little site was a final year university project by Andy Thelwell. The five colourful Flash animated sections take students through everything they need to know about circuits from what makes them work to understanding circuit diagrams. Each section contains pages of information about the topic, a short activity and a quiz.
