This free site features lots of award certificates which will be useful to any teachers looking for something quick to print out. Watch out for US educational terms & spellings.

Do your students believe that everything they read on the Internet is true? Do they simply copy from books or websites without thinking about how accurate those sources might be? See if they get caught out by the excellent ‘All About Explorers’ website that is deliberately full of inaccuracies. You’d hope that they’d see that the Christopher Columbus information is obviously fake but I imagine that the Sir Francis Drake page might cause some confusion.

Primary software developer Fiery Ideas have a great collection of free downloads available on their website.

There are some really useful whole class utilities such as a timer, tablepoints total keeper,  peer assessment “chillimeter”, customisable dice and a noiseometer!

There are even two seasonal ”Advent Quiz” activities (one for KS1, one for KS2).

Note: Some downloads require (free) registration to access.

The Kent NGfL site is one that I’ve always regularly used and linked to. This particular link is to their interactive games page which features some brilliant resources created by James Barrett. Formerly a teacher at Toftwood Infant School, James also created the ICT Games site I’ve mentioned in the past.

There are some absolutely superb sensory story powerpoints on this website from teacher Pete Wells. I love his version of Dickens’ Christmas Carol! There are also a selection of program downloads including an interactive weather map and a “drag and plop” version of There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly.

Factsheets, photographs and lesson resources are included on this Olympic 2012 website. Some of the teaching ideas include designing a mascot, making medals, graphing Olympic facts and writing a code of conduct. If 2012 seems a long time away then you could adapt many of the ideas and base them on other major sporting events.

We complete our tour of RBC websites (well, all the ones with useful material accessible by the general public!) with the West Midlands Network (WMNet) website.

The WMNet site includes a collection of interactive whiteboard resources, details of their D&T “Crossover” project (which includes some bridge and buggy building resources), a virtual tour of the Mill and Engine House at Warwick Castle and the great Climate Change mini-site.

There are lots of mini-sites available through the South West Grid for Learning  (SWGfL).

One resource that particularly caught my eye was the West Somserset Railway website. You can take a virtual trip on the railway and the site includes a CVC word machine, a few Literacy card games and some numeracy activities. There’s also an excellent reenactment of the WWII Evacuation. Navigating the WSR site can be a little tricky at times but it is still worth looking at.

Other SWGfL resources include Journey Along A River, the ICT/Science resource ‘Plant Life in the Garden’ and the Making the News free online publishing system.

The Northern Grid for Learning (NGfL) has one of the more established RBC sites having supplied excellent material for many years. I have used a lot of their Special Educational Needs resources in the past, particularly SEN Switcher.

The Northern Grid Mini-Applications are a small selection of useful teaching programs. The NGfL site also features football themed Literacy resources for Y5, 6 & 7, Early Years material including the online Town Trail activity and lots of numeracy resources. I also spotted these copyright free Police Force photographs.

Our tour of the Regional Broadband Consortia websites continues this week with a visit to the North West Learning Grid (NWLG) site.

I’ve mentioned the NWLG Primary Music resources and the World War II material in past blog entries.

Other resources on the site include Key Stage 1 interactive geography games, KS2 map games, a simple ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ animation, ‘Life Processes and Living Things’ activities and some Year 2 and Year 5 maths games.
