Finding material on the London Grid for Learning (LGfL) site is quite difficult. A lot of the resources are tagged as premium and can only be accessed by London based teachers. There are some useful links to material on the LGfL and associated LEA sites, though. ‘Holnet - The History of London’ has WWII and Victorian resources. The DACTA NXT project details the use of Lego Mindstorms kits with KS2 students. The Tower Hamlets ICT Team have produced an excellent new primary ICT scheme of work.

The East of England Broadband Network has a huge selection of resources that can be accessed freely by educators.

I’ve mentioned the British Myths & Legends resource in an earlier blog entry. The E2BN site also features a great multimedia gallery packed full of useful photographs, sound files and video clips. Their Celebrating Language resource showcases diversity of languages and cultures in the region through presentations featuring local children.

Other useful resources: E2BN Flash Meeting, Essex Life in Archive Film, ICT in the Early YearsLocal Heroes, The Day After,  Cook it! and Digital Story Telling Education.

CLEO Resources October 16, 2007

I’m going to be taking a look at some of the resources available through each of the English Regional Broadband Consortia websites this week. I don’t know how many people have the chance to look at the material other areas are putting online. It’s well worth doing as there are a lot of resources that are freely available for use by teachers, no matter their location.

First up is the CLEO (Cumbria and Lancashie Education Online) website. Some of the resources that caught my eye were the very interesting Chinese paintbox package, several useful RE videoclips and the excellent Literacy material based around William Wordworth’s poem ‘Lucy Gray’. There’s also a great section on creating stop motion animations with plenty of examples of work by students.

Google Docs: Presentations September 18, 2007

The Google Docs service, that allows you to create and share documents and spreadsheets online, has just been expanded to include presentations. You can choose to create a new presentation, upload one, email one in or grab one from a website location. At the moment there are no fancy (or even basic!) transitions accessible but it’s still a good tool for simple slide creation, especially if you’re working collaboratively. As usual, you’ll need a (free) Google account to access the service.

I was delighted to read, on Merlin John’s news blog, that the excellent Footee website is making a return. Saved from oblivion, thanks to site creator Phil Clegg, it’s now found a home as part of the Football Association’s website. In Footee, students complete educational games in order to earn the “currency” needed to fund their own fantasy football team. I used the site a lot with students back when it was first online. It’s a great method of reinforcing a wide variety of topics in a very fun way.

Here’s some more Rugby World Cup themed sites, many of which could be adapted to support Primary Languages work…

http://www.nacell.org.uk/resources/online_res_sports.htm
A whole collection of rugby links (as well as some for other major sporting events such as football, cycling and the Olympics).

Essential rugby vocabulary in French.

British Council: Parlez vous rugby?
http://www.britishcouncil.org/bg/france-education-parlez-vous-rugby.htm
Some of the sections of the rugby posters document (towards the bottom of the webpage) might be useful for different subjects (such as the one on art and rugby). There’s also a “Survival Kit” with useful French phrases.

If you’re looking to link your maths lessons to the current Rugby World Cup (or later in the year to the Six Nations etc.) then check out the ‘Rugby Scoring’ activity on the excellent EdRugby site from the Australian Rugby Union. There are also activities for other subject areas including a great one on rugby writing and also lessons based around rugby kits.

The National Maritime Museum website has some excellent resources for Key Stage 1 and 2. Younger students can read about Trim, the ships’ cat or find out about the myths and legends behind the stars. There’s a section on safety at sea for older pupils as well as resources for the Tudors and the Vikings.

Higher Bebington Junior School teacher Doug Stitcher has asked me to give his resources site a mention. It includes lots of Flash games created by Doug and his students as well as links to other websites.
