When I take over my KS1, Year 2 Class in October (Week before H/t) I have just been told that there will also be a HLTA in my classroom. I have never worked with a TA before (always worked in KS2). The school has given me guidance on a series of things that she is expected to do:

-Work one on one with children
-Work in groups
-Teach the whole class and team-teach with me

I'm not sure I like giving over the control of teaching the whole class etc. because the school have also told me to expect her to do her own planning for PPA time teaching the class while marking the work and everything seperately. I'm not sure I like this idea as I would much prefer to have complete control over the class and children so I can monitor progress etc.

Any advice on how I should do this? Any advice from people who already have a HLTA with them?

I had a HLTA in my year 3/4 class last term and on the whole she was very useful. Our headteacher was happy for her to plan some activities from my own medium term plans and she would undertake a small amount of whole class teaching for a 45minute slot each week. Our partnership worked well and she would give me copies of all her plans and observations, I did monitor what she was doing closely and ensured that I was still fully in control of assessment and tracking the progress of the children.

What you need to remember is that a HLTA has had to undergo rigourous assessment to gain their status and they are capable of leading activities in class. We have two in our school and they both currently have opportunites to support PPA cover undertaking structured play with FS/Y1 and DT sessions with Y1/Y2.

Your new situation will depend on the working relationship you have with your HLTA try and if possible try to spend some time with them before you take up your new role. Hope this helps
